The legacy of Khallikote Unitary University spanning over one and half centuries traces a glorious history in the educational landscape of Odisha. This center for higher learning caters to the education of students of State of Odisha in general and students of South Odisha including economically backward SC and ST students.

            While the institution has been operational since 1878, Science Classes at the Under-graduate level was introduced in the year 1944 with 32 seats in Chemistry Honours. The Post Graduate teaching in Chemistry began with 16 seats in the year 1963 and in 2016 the PG Chemistry seats increased to 32.

            Teaching and research are two formidable pillars of pedagogical practice adopted by the Post Graduate Department of Chemistry since its inception. Eminent Professors namely Prof. P.S.R. Murty, Prof. R.C. Acharya, Prof. N.S. Chickerur, Prof. A.K. Panigrahy, Prof. M.D.P. Rao, Prof. R. Panda, Prof. P.P. Mahapatra, Prof. B.C. Singh, Prof. N.N. Roy, Prof. S.A. Mishra, Prof. A.K. Patnaik, Prof. P. Gouda, Prof. Ellarani Pattanaik and others have contributed significantly for the furtherance of teaching and research in the Department. Nearly sixty scholars have been awarded with PhD. degrees and ten students with M.Phil. degrees from the Department. Chemistry scholars of the Department have published articles in leading national and international Chemistry research journals. Over the years graduate and post graduate Chemistry students obtaining degrees from the Department are well placed in Govt. and other jobs. The teachers, students and scholars are striving hard to make the Department as Center of Excellence in the fields of teaching and research.
