Khallikote Unitary University is a premier institution of the state of Odisha and the largest institution of South Odisha. It was established in the year 1878. The faculty of commerce was started in the Khallikote Unitary University in the year 1954 with undergraduate teaching facility. Department of Post Graduate Studies in Commerce was established in this college during the academic year 1963-64 and M.Phil. classes were started from the session 1994-95. Post Graduate Commerce Department, which catered to the need of higher education in commerce in the region, continues to be center of attraction not only for the students of south Odisha but also for students of another region. In its history spanning over six decades, it has redefined commerce education in the state. The Department has the legitimate claim and pride of being the premier department in Odisha for course curriculum development, teaching, and research in commerce discipline. The rapid growth of the department of commerce is reflected in its expansion as well as novelty in its academic programmers. The Department of commerce has introduced Computer Application in business in both B. Com and M. Com classes with practical from the academic session 2007-08. CBCS has been introduced in the course curriculum from the session 2015-16. Presently, the Department runs three parallel Programs viz. B.com (Three years) and M.com, (two years).

OBJECTIVES

The Objectives of the Department are –

  • To impart instruction to the Under Graduate and Post Graduate students offering commerce as a course of study.
  • To enable our students to have a substantial and dignified source of livelihood after completion of their education in the Department.
  • To play a stewardship role by the faculty members in guiding and helping the sister college specially located in south Odisha.
  • To develop and restructure course curriculum so as to suit the demands of the changing environment.
  • To achieve academic excellence in teaching, learning and extension activities through utilization of local resources.
  • To pursue research and investigation in the field of trade and commerce for policy formulation and implementation.
  • To facilitate participation of teacher in Refresher courses, Orientation Programs, and other Faculty Development Programs.
  • To develop skill and problem-solving aptitude of the students in the field of Business Studies.
  • To groom students for professional occupations, entrepreneurship, consultancy work in the area of accounts keeping, tax matters, trade facilities, financial market operations, marketing activities, human resource management, etc.
  • To promote entrepreneurial skills for self-employment.

COURSES OFFERED BY DEPARTMENT OF COMMERCE

Bachelor of Commerce (Honours)

Department of Commerce introduced the B Com (Hons) programme to its basket of contemporary and progressive programmes in the year 1954.This program caters to commerce aspirants who desire to build their professional competence on a higher plateau with specialized knowledge in the field of Business and Commerce. The B Com (Hons) course of Department of Commerce, Khallikote Autonomous College is a three year degree programme divided into six semesters. Each semester contains four or five papers. The programme is Choice Based credit system and career oriented in its design, course structure and teaching – learning process. A modern syllabus was introduced by higher education department of Odisha and implemented from the same year. The curriculum is developed duly considering the desired level of knowledge exposure in the context of ever changing environment in global business.

Post Graduate (M.Com)

The objective of the programme is to develop teaching and research talent to create academic expertise suiting to contemporary needs of the society. There is a need to transform teaching as a profession more than a mere career to bring in the right skills, capability and attitude in the field of academics in the larger interest of sustainable education. The programme aims to create faculty of quality and competence in the subject areas of Commerce & Management. The two years Master degree (M.Com) program is divided into 4 semesters. Each semester contains five papers of 100 marks each. The programme is Choice Based credit system and career oriented in its design, course structure and teaching – learning process. The curriculum is developed duly considering the desired level of knowledge exposure in the context of ever changing environment in global business.

M.Phil. (Commerce)

The M.Phil. (Commerce) program is a one year program designed and well- founded for smooth transition into advanced research including doctoral level (Ph.D). The program equips the researcher to aspire for higher disciplinary and methodological competencies in research. As per UGC guide line, the entrance test is conducted for the M.Phil. admission from the academic session 2009-10. The program and includes two courses and a dissertation. Two primary intensive courses in the general and specific research methodologies and mathematics for business research (including functional specialization tools and techniques). The programme provides the requisite knowledge ,skills and abilities for planning, designing, engaging and interpreting research data for problem solving and consultancy for researchers, academicians, practitioners and corporate. Presently M.Phil is invalid as per UGC guideline.
